1. If I fail a driving test, when can I take this test again?
The regulation about when a person who does not pass a driving license test can take the next test: According to Article 67 of Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety, if an applicant who applies for automobile or motorcycle driving license and then does not pass his or her written test or/and driving test, he or she can take another test more than seven days after the previous test date. If an applicant who applies for automobile or motor cycle driving licens e test and then passes his or her written test, but not driving test, he or she will not need to take a written test within one year when applying for another test.
2. Can a person aged over 16 attend driving license test of light-duty motorcycle?
According to Subparagraph of Paragraph 1, Article 60 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety,” the age for taking driving license tests of general automobiles, light-duty motorcycles or original heavy-duty motorcycles is 18 years old. Therefore, a person aged over 16 who has not reached 18 years old cannot take driving license test of automobile (motorcycle).
3.What documentary proofs should I prepare if I apply for driving license test of automobile (motorcycle) for the first time?
If you apply for driving license test of automobile (motorcycle), please register in Department of Motor Vehicles with the following documentary proofs:
(1) One copy of Registration Form for Driving License of Automobile (Motorcycle) (An applicant should pass the physical examination first. An applicant applying for automobile driving license needs to enclose a qualifying result from a physical ability examination.)
(2) One 1-inch photo with gloss surface, plain background, neither hat nor sunglasses worn, frontal bust and recently taken (the same as the photo pasted on the registration form of general automobile (motorcycle) driving license )
(3) ID Card or other valid driving licenses
(4) Documentary proofs of driving experience:
• For those who attend driving license test of original light vehicle: a learning permit (being issued for over three months).
• For those who attend driving license test of light-duty or original heavy-duty motorcycle: If holding a driving license of level above an original light vehicle, people do not need to take a written test. Otherwise, no documentary proof of driving experience is needed.
4. If I have held a driving license of light-duty motorcycle and want to convert to a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcycle, how should I proceed?
If you have held a driving license of light-duty motorcycle and want to convert to a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcycle, please prepare one copy of Registration Form for Driving License of Motorcycle (an physical examination should be taken and reach its qualification), one 1-inch photo with gloss surface, plain background, no sunglasses worn, frontal bust and recently taken (the same as the photo pasted on the registration form of motorcycle driving license ), ID Card, and a valid driving license of light-duty motorcycle. It is not necessary to take a written test. After a riving test is passed, you can immediately get a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcyc le.
5.What are the assigned authorized hospitals for physical examination in Kaohsiung City ?
The authorized hospitals for both physical examination and physical ability examination are Kaohsiung Municipal Min-Sheng Hospital, United Hospital, Datung Hospital, Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital, Hsiao-kang Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho memorial Hospital, Jianren Hospital, You Chang United Hospital, Lin-Hai Hospital, and Naijung Hospital. Besides, applicant for motorcycle driver license can also go to following hospital or health center for physical examination, those are Zouying Armed Forces General Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung Municipal Ci Jin Hospital, and Health Center of Nanzih Export Processing Zone. All these hospitals provide blank forms. For saving you time, you can directly go to the hospital for physical examination, without coming to our office for the blank forms first. The validity period of physical examination form (Registration Form for Driving License) is one year.
6.What is the requirement for applying for a learning permit for a light vehicle?
The age for applying for a learning permit for light vehicle is 18 years old. After taking a physical examination and physical ability examination in the national hospitals or the hospitals assigned by highways supervision authorities, you can bring a Registration Form for Driving License of General (Professional) Automobile, registration fee of NT$ 100, one 1-inch photo with gloss surface, plain background, neither hat nor sunglasses worn, frontal bust and recently taken (the same as the photo pasted on the registration form of car driving license ), and ID Card with you. And then, you can go to any motor vehicle department (office, or station) in Taiwan to proceed with the application.
Qualified standards of physical examination and physical ability examination are as follows:
(A) Physical Examination:
• Eyesight: On a bare eyesight examination, two eyes' eyesight reaches over 0.6; each one reaches over 0.5. Or, after correction, two eyes' eyesight reaches over 0.8; each one reaches over 0.6.
• Color vision: able to distinguish red , yellow, and green.
• Hearing: being able to distinguish sounds .
• Four limbs: complete and healthy.
• Mobility: Joints in whole body and four limbs are actively mobile.
• Illness: having neither mental exhaustion, nor blind eyes, nor epilepsy, nor other illnesses which can have influence on driving a car (motorcycle).
• Others: neither alcohol, nor anesthetic, nor stimulant which invades the body.
(B) Physical Ability Examination :
• Eye view scale: left and right eye can view a range of 150 degrees.
• Eye view at night: no night blindness.
7. Why should I apply for a learning permit (for automobile)?
According to Article 60 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety,” an examinee for light vehicle driving license test needs to have driving experience (over three months for an ordinary driving license; over six months for a professional driving license). So in order to learn how to drive in an area for learner's driving, it is required to apply for a learning permit for automobile when learning driving a car. When learning driving on road, please follow the specific road and time that a local police authority assigns and also have a driver with a driving license of the same type of vehicle to accompany, supervise and monitor you. A valid period of a learning perm it is one year (since a date of receiving the permit until an expiry date). Only a valid period of experience of tests lasts forever.
8. What are the required qualifications for participants who would like to join a driving school?
The qualifications for participants who would like to join a driving school are as follows.
1. Experience is not needed if attending a driving school for original heavy-duty motorcycles.
2. Those who attend a driving school for large heavy-duty motorcycles need to have held a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcycle for over one year.
3. Those who attend an ordinary driving school for small vehicles need to have a learning permit or a learning permit which is valid for one week after the school started.
4. Those who attend a professional driving school for small vehicles need to have a learning permit or a driving license of general small vehicle.
5. Those who attend an ordinary driving school for large trucks need to have held an ordinary driving license of small vehicle for over six months.
6. Those who attend a professional driving school for large trucks need to have held a professional driving license of small vehicle for over six months.
7. Those who attend an ordinary driving school for large passenger vehicles need to have held an ordinary driving license of large truck for over six months or an ordinary driving license of small vehicle for over two years.
8. Those who attend a professional driving school for large passenger vehicles need to have held a professional driving license of large truck for over six months or a professional driving license of small vehicle for over two years.
9. Those who attend an ordinary driving school for container trucks need to have held an ordinary driving license of large passenger vehicle for over six months or an ordinary driving license of large truck for over one years and six months.
10. Those who attend a professional driving school for container trucks need to have held a professional driving license of large passenger vehicle for over six months or a professional driving license of large truck for over one year and six months.
9. If I have already had a driving license of small vehicle, can I directly apply for driving license test for a large passenger vehicle?
If you would like to apply for an ordinary driving license test of large passenger vehicle, you should have held an ordinary driving license of large truck for over one year. If you would like to apply for a professional driving license test for a large passenger vehicle, you should have held a professional driving license of large truck for over one year. According to Item 7 & 8 of Subparagraph 2 of Article 60 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety” in driving training institutions accredited by the Government, if completing a promotion from a driving school for small vehicles into that for large passenger vehicles, (1) those who having had an ordinary driving license of small vehicle for over two years need to take a test for an ordinary driving license for a large passenger vehicle; (2) those who having had a professional driving license of small vehicle for over two years need to take a professional driving license test for a large passenger vehicle.
10. During the period when my driving license is under suspension (or cancellation) can I take a driving license test?
According to Item 2 and 3, subparagraph 1 of Article 62 of “Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety”, a person whose driving license is under suspension or cancellation cannot take test for any type for driving license. Besides, according to the subparagraph 2 of the same article, before the punishment of license suspension or cancellation has not been determined to enforce, the driver cannot take the test for promotion of driving license. If the driver passing the promotion test and obtaining a higher level driving license, the new driving license will be suspended or cancelled together when the punishment is enforced. But that is not adapted drivers who hold a driving license of motorcycle and want to take test for driving license of light vehicle.
11. What are the regulations relevant to driving license test of a large heavy-duty motorcycle?
To meet the situation in which Taiwan has officially allowed import and new license for heavy-duty motorcycles of over 150cc since joining WTO for half year, from July 1, 2002 onwards, driving licenses of heavy-duty motorcycles are divided into categories as follows:
1. a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcycle (over 50 ㏄ and less than 250 ㏄ )
2. a driving license of large heavy-duty motorcycle (over 250 ㏄ )
3. A. Relevant regulations about driving license tests are as follows.
(1) A driving license test for original heavy-duty motorcycle: its procedure still follows the regulations about driving license tests and receiving driving license made before July 1, 2002 (please read the above-listed Question 3 & 4).
(2) (Before Jul y 1, 2002, those who received a driving license of heavy-duty motorcycle should, before its expiry date, renew the driving license of original heavy-sized motorcycle. If a person does not apply for renewal stipulated by the regulations, he or she cannot drive using the old license.)
B. A driving license test of large heavy-duty motorcycle:
(1) Application qualification:
(2) Age: needs to be twenty years old or above. There is no limitation on oldest age.
(3) Experience: Needs to hold a driving license of original heavy-duty motorcycle with over-on e-year experience and also to complete a driving program in a driving training institution accredited by the Government.
